Indian tribal literature, often referred to as "Adivasi Sahitya," encompasses the oral and written traditions of various tribal communities, including songs, folk tales, and other forms of expression, often reflecting their unique cultures and perspectives. Tribal literature often explores themes related to nature, spirituality, social structures, resistance, and the struggles of tribal communities. While some tribal literature is available in English, much of it is written in vernacular languages such as Gondi, Kurukh, Santali, Ho, and Bhili, as well as in languages like Gujarati, Bengali, Odia, Malayalam, and Kannada. This is a bitter reality that written Adivasi literature is mainly confined to a few larger communities and certain regions, while the majority of the Adivasi communities have not yet had any written literature penned by their own people. Moreover, their own indigenous languages have become vulnerable and endangered due to the lack of state recognition and support. As a result the academic discourse on Adivasis, with very little representation from these communities, leaves little space for Adivasi voices in Indian Literature. The present anthology is an attempt to foreground the hidden treasures of Indian tribal literature.
