I would love to share a bit about work of our team at Institute of Medical Science, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi a tertiary care 2500 bedded university hospital and medical college in northern part of India. IMS, BHU, Varanasi is one of few medical colleges in India where cardiac surgery is being done. We cater to a population of more than 25 adjoining districts for their cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgery needs. Most of the patients get financial assistance from PM and CM Relief Fund and Ayushman Bharat Yojna. Apart from cardiac, our department is one of few government centers in India where lung and vascular surgeries are also being done in large numbers. It’s a humble beginning and we feel happy that God gave us chance to serve humanity of this region. Since 2011, when I joined IMS BHU, working in government sector and trying to develop Cardiac surgery is like rowing a boat against a mountain stream. But yes at end of day when you see a kid smiling or a mother in joy to see her kid recovering or hopes back on the faces or to see stopped heart beating again after surgery is over ... these are the moments which heal your pains and sacrifices you have made in this journey. Getting chance to treat poorest of poor and teach & mentor bright young minds is a blessing. Nothing happens without team, in our team there are many members behind a successful heart and lung surgery... cardiac surgeon and cardiac anesthetic, senior and junior residents , perfusionists, OT technicians, assistants, OT nurses, ICU and ward nurses, paramedics, physiotherapists, ward sahayak, sanitary staff, office staff and many more. I am also very thankful and grateful to all departments especially Dept of Anesthesiology, General Surgery, Radiodiagnosis and Cardiology for their support and help in all possible ways. Special thanks to all manufacturers , suppliers and distributors of surgical consumables. There is a lot to be done and I hope the development of the department will attain new heights in the coming future. Thanking you for support and blessings once more.
