It seems we've found our way onto a worship "carousel" of sorts... Spinning endlessly. Not going much of anywhere. From time to time we switch from the pony to the giraffe, but otherwise it's the same circular motion. Fun. At first. But we can't seem to get off the thing. Or maybe we don't want to. After all, we paid for this ticket and a little nausea is apparently no match for its mesmerizing tune and blaring lights. Old, new, fast, slow, loud, quiet, mixed, blended, pureed. None of these options heal our deepest worship-related ills. Maybe the "problem" with our worship isn't style- or structure-related, after all. Maybe it's more a question of its size. Imagine a worship centered in a heart of reverence, trust, and delight, overflowing into words, choices, and actions in the gathering and scattering of God's regenerated, Spirit-indwelt people. A worship focused on the majesty and glory of God, reflecting a deeper understanding of His greatness and love. A worship holding a humble grip on the details of our gatherings, keeping us from devouring each other in the process. A worship fostering mission instead of sidelining the Church over mere methods. Imagine a worship no more ruined by adjusting its forms than it could be revived by the same. A worship that binds instead of breaking. Deepening instead of disconnecting. Something better. Something bigger.
