This book is one of Liang Qichao's major works from his later years on the history of Chinese philosophy. The book was originally based on lecture notes from his teachings at the Tsinghua Institute of Chinese Studies, recorded by his student. In these lectures, Liang advanced many original and insightful ideas. He argued that there is no single, unified standard for the meaning of philosophy; rather, it varies across regions and nations. Confucian philosophy, in his view, differs from Western philosophy not only in scope but also in subject matter. Many of the issues discussed in Confucian philosophy were either absent from or approached differently in Western thought, while the central questions of Western philosophy were often regarded in China as unnecessary or insufficiently relevant. On this basis, Liang suggested that the term "Confucian Philosophy" might more appropriately be rendered as "The Way and Art of Confucianism."
