This is the third book in the Women of Color and Accomplishment series, a project that began in 2020 following the murder of George Floyd. Deeply disturbed by the racism and injustice still present in America, artist Carol Jacobsen chose to speak out through her art. Drawing inspiration from Martin Luther King, Jr.'s call to judge people not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character, she began painting portraits of African American women whose stories have been largely ignored in mainstream history. By January 2024, she had completed 114 portraits. This volume features 32 of those portraits, each accompanied by a brief biography. These are women who, despite facing barriers like racism, poverty, and gender discrimination, went on to improve not only their own lives but also the lives of those around them. The women in this book-past and present-are visionaries, truth-tellers, healers, and heroes. From Darnella Frazier, who courageously filmed the police killing of George Floyd, to pioneers in education, medicine, activism, and the arts, each story is a testament to the power of courage and community service. Printed on high-quality color paper, this book is both a visual tribute and an educational tool. It seeks to inspire readers to recognize the impact of these women and to reflect on how each of us can "do the right thing" in our own lives. Whether you're continuing the fight, standing up for justice, or simply being a source of inspiration, the stories in this book remind us that change often starts with a single act of courage.
