Ten Ways to Color. This book is a source book of color ideas based on ten methods of achieving color design that demonstrate the most common practices of color in art. Timbre covers the visually abstract aspect of color influenced by hue, value, intensity, or the quality of a color produced by a combination of physical color characteristics. Reduction exploits the three dimensions of color by isolating the unique qualities of each dimension to engage the eye through simplification. Configuration refers to the general overall design and manipulation of pictorial factors that modify the interrelationship of colors through the influence of shape or by the proximity of colors to each other. Tone describes the unique feeling of an individual color or group of colors to anticipate certain psychological attitudes with which the viewer may identify. Association is a social concept of likes and dislikes based on the personal experience and innate perceptiveness of the viewer based on symbolism and traditional color associations of local color. Synergism is the joining of different color attributes to produce a color experience that transcends the individual color components and achieves higher levels of visual satisfaction than color attributes separately can attain.
