Charles Taylor was a very brilliant mechanic and craftsman. When the Wright brothers told their friend they needed an engine for their flying machine he agreed to build one. This was unchartered territory. No one had ever built an airplane engine. It took Charles just six weeks to make this engine using a few sketches, aluminum, a lathe, drill press, and some of the Wrights' bicycle shops hand tools. Most people don’t know that it was because of Charles the brothers were able to make that monumental first flight on December 17, 1903.
