From the Preface, "Mr. Edwards had planned a body of divinity, in a new method, and in the form of a history; in which he was first to show how the most remarkable events, in all ages from the fall to the present times, recorded in sacred and profane history, were adapted to promote the work of redemption; and then to trace, by the light of scripture prophecy, how the same work should be yet further carried on even to the end of the world." "The Great Affair of the Soul's Eternal Salvation" contains five sermons delivered by Edwards at Northampton, Massachusetts, where he served as pastor and teacher from 1733-1735. These include, "Justification by Faith Alone", "Pressing into the Kingdom of God", "Ruth's Resolution", "The Justice of God in the Damnation of Sinners", and "The Excellency of Jesus Christ."In "Types of the Messiah," Edwards declares that "That the things of the Old Testament are types of things appertaining to the Messiah and his kingdom and salvation." Like most of the Puritans, he held to the Reformed theology. Edwards is widely regarded as "one of America's most important and original philosophical theologians". Edwards' theological work is broad in scope, but he was rooted in Reformed theology, the metaphysics of theological determinism, and the Puritan heritage. Edwards played a critical role in shaping the First Great Awakening, and oversaw some of the first revivals in 1733-35 at his church in Northampton, Massachusetts.Edwards delivered the sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God", a classic of early American literature, during another revival in 1741, following George Whitefield's tour of the Thirteen Colonies.Edwards is well known for his many books, The End For Which God Created the World, The Life of David Brainerd, which inspired thousands of missionaries throughout the 19th century, and Religious Affections, which many Reformed Evangelicals still read today. Edwards died from a smallpox inoculation shortly after beginning the presidency at the College of New Jersey (Princeton). He was the grandfather of Aaron Burr, third Vice President of the United States.Ted Cortez Publishing
