"The structure of 1 John and the relationship of this New Testament text to the Gospel of St John is problematic. From previous work the First letter of John was divided into 14 units based on rhetorical analysis involving patterns of repetition. In this thesis it is proposed that each such unit of 1 John makes allusion to primarily one passage in the Gospel of John. Generally for each unit of 1 John, the Gospel can be searched for a passage containing the key repeated words in that unit. Once this passage is identified it is discovered that other vocabulary and grammatical structures are shared between the passages . From here the passages are compared and analysed according to how the Gospel passage was used in the 1 John unit - what was omitted, what was repeated, what was altered."--Abstract from dissertation.
