William Paul Vogt (1943-2016) is known for an eclectic body of work addressing the complexity of social science inquiry when driven by compelling questions. In every case, his work demonstrates his curiosity about the social world and its most compelling and intractable problems. In broad terms, his contributions to innovating research design are twofold. First, he found unique ways to characterize design decisions by breaking down commonplace, often binary, conceptualizations of those decisions, particularly the divisive quantitative/qualitative debate and reformulating them to address underlying methodological conundrums. His second contribution is tied to the first. After reframing research design decisions, he sought to demystify research and reconcile the discomfort that comes from the inevitable compromises researchers must make.
