Robert W. Fogel (1926-2013) was born in New York City to Russian immigrant parents whose reverence for learning encouraged his academic pursuits. His academic and research exploits led to him becoming one of the most influential scholars in economics. In 1993, he shared the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences with Douglass North for having renewed research in economic history by applying economic theory and quantitative methods in order to explain economic and institutional change. According to the prize committee, this made it "possible to question and to reassess earlier results, which not only increased our knowledge of the past, but contributed to the elimination of irrelevant theories," showing that the traditional understanding of economic growth and development needed modification.
