In 1959, Dr Mary Ellen Avery, a young Research Fellow in Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, made an observation that led to the understanding and treatment of Respiratory Distress Syndrome, also know as Hyaline Membrane Disease. At the time, the worldwide annual mortality rate of the disease was in the millions - 25,000 in the United States alone; by the end of the Twentieth Century, largely thanks to Dr Avery's pioneering work, this number had been reduced to less than a tenth. During the rest of her professional life, Mel championed the health of children all over the world. Dr Bojan Hamlin Jennings taught her as an undergraduate at Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts. They remained friends throughout the ensuing decades, and in 2006, Mel asked Bojan to write her biography. This book is based on the author's personal knowledge of her subject, greatly enhanced by diaries, letters, photographs, professional documents, and archival materials from Mel's library.
