Joseph Caldwell (1773-1835) was a U. S. educator, Presbyterian minister, and mathematician. He was born in Lamington, New Jersey. Caldwell entered Princeton College in 1787, and during this whole collegiate course, he maintained the highest rank as a scholar. He was graduated as Latin salutatorian in 1791 at the age of eighteen. After his graduation he engaged in teaching for some time. He was the first president of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, holding the office from 1804 until 1812, and from 1816 until his death in 1835.
