Grant (1852-1940) was an American author who also served as a probate court judge from1893-1923. Born in Boston, Massachusetts he graduated from Harvard in 1873, received the first Ph.D in English granted by Harvard in1876 and a law degree in 1879. His first novel, The Confessions of a Frivolous Girl, appeared in 1880 and several more followed, the most successful of which was Unleavened Bread (1900), the story of a woman who abandons her moral standards in her search for prestige and dominance. This novel was published in 1904 and contains 11 illustrations by F C Yohn (1875-1933), an accomplished artist and magazine illustrator.
