While remaining attentive to the performances of hegemonic state power during the period, The Sound Before the Fury uniquely theorizes how grassroots activists and artists have articulated compelling counter-discourses to the dominant discourses of race, crime, security, and law and order. Drawing on primary sources culled from fieldwork and archival research in Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, New Orleans, and New York, the project explores the ways in which opposing definitions of crisis situations have dramatically clashed. It demonstrates that the poetry of social movements have articulated visions of antiracist and class solidarity that contrasts sharply with the counter-insurgent discourse of neoliberalism. It will conclude with observations about the emancipatory futures social movements could produce for the twenty-first century.
