The overarching goal of this dissertation is to explore and explain political responses to economic marginality. I engage this broad topic vis-a-vis an issue-oriented approach, focusing on two of the most economically disadvantaged populations in the realm of healthcare: the uninsured and the Medicaid insured. The project addressees two sets of inquiries: 1) How do the populations in question participate politically and 2) under what conditions can these groups be mobilized to take political action? Employing various methodological tools (i.e. in-depth interviews, advanced statistical analyses of primary and secondary survey data and a field experiment), I identify patterns of non-participation for the groups in question and consider the processes that produce their political apathy. Moving beyond general examinations of participatory differences between social classes, I undertake more fine-grained scrutiny of behavioral dynamics within underesourced groups, paying particular attention to the distinctive ways that attitudinal, institutional and demographic configurations among the disadvantaged lead to differential political outcomes.
