One of this dissertation's key arguments is that the AIU aimed to use the classroom to transform Iraqi Jewish women from "traditional natives" into "Western" women. While the AIU teachers succeeded in many instances, these new developments created tensions between the women and their communities and between the AIU schools and the local communities. Another key argument is that while many Iraqi Jewish girls and women experienced increased access to education and the public sphere during the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, women continued to yield to, and often to reproduce, patriarchal rule both at home and in the Jewish community. Most generally, this dissertation shows that Iraqi Jewish identities were constantly in flux during the late 19 th and early 20th centuries, shifting in response to the opportunities and threats facing Iraqi Jews.
