Mitford (later to become the first Lord Redesdale) was an urbane aristocrat, had charm, looks and excellent manners. An accomplished linguist and writer, Mitford was the outstanding chronicler of the Meiji Restoration, complementing the writings of his contemporary Ernest Satow.
