Memories in Lace is written by Sophia Emmanouilidou and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. It's available with International Standard Book Number or ISBN identification 1036456145 (ISBN 10) and 9781036456146 (ISBN 13).
A non-linear narrative composed at the juncture(s) of creative nonfiction or fictionalized testimonial writing, this book offers a cluster of memories, collected and “crocheted” by Xénia. A third generation Greek American, Xénia visits the island of Zakynthos in the Ionian Sea, Greece, with the intention of completing a studious, field-focused research into the lives of elderly Greek women, some expatriates, some repatriates, some never having left the island. The interconnected stories comprise reminiscences of (im)migration, historical/personal crises and intergenerational resilience. Drawing from the principles of the Public Humanities, the book records individual experiences, which gradually transmute into choral storytelling across time, space and generic quality. The book mobilizes a mental transition: from the perspective of the exceptional and celebrated individual woman to the voices of “ordinary” women, whose tales of self-appreciation allow for a leap into a shared, gendered experience.
