It's post-World War II America. Two boys in the booming steel city of Pittsburgh grow up amid post-war prosperity as part of a strong and expanding middle-class. But there are gnawing uncertainties like the Cold War and a gradually escalating U.S. military involvement in a far-off Asian country called Vietnam. Near the end of the turbulent decade of the 1960s, the boys graduate from high school. They enlist in the Army together, and are predictably sent to Vietnam where their lives and fortunes radically diverge.
