Grade 1-3-- Working on the premise that Columbus's second voyage has been neglected in favor of the first one, Fischetto gives readers the lowdown. What had been a hugely complicated voyage that included 17 ships and more than 1000 men (no women) is here focused on a single ship so small that the crew hardly has room to maneuver. Thus, when the pig-man loads his swine, conditions become almost unbearable. Upon Columbus's return to the New World, nothing goes well. Crops fail, the natives turn hostile--but the pigs are a great success. What makes this book a standout are Galli's stylized watercolors of gravity-defying ocean waves tossing tiny ships and oversized human beings who dwarf their houses, boats, even the landscape. Their chunky bodies and rolling eyes combined with the solid bulging curves of ship, sail, water, and land are vivid abstractions with a happy, positive feel to them. An author's note at the end gives a little more factual information. The second voyage is indeed worthy of more notice. Don't miss the boat. --Ruth Semrau, Lovejoy School, Allen, TX Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc
