It argues that the book is a falsely authored work (pseudepigraphon), written in the persona of an invented disciple of Jesus. It lays out John's distinctive ideology and offers an exciting, new symbolic reading of its narrative. And in its later chapters, it argues that other works--among them, 1 John, 2 John, 3 John, the Apocryphon of John, and Revelation--are also falsely authored works, written to co-opt the identity of this invented disciple.
